Vestige - Interstices

2019 in collaboration with Chen Jiexiao

wire mesh, angsana seeds, ice, fishing line, scourer

variable dimension, 30 minutes

Extensively introduced as a shade tree by the British, the Angsana tree was subsequently widely planted as part of the Singapore Garden City campaign, launched in 1967, but widely culled in the early 90s due to an infectious disease. 'Vestige-interstices' is an installation of a pseudo-landscape made up of angsana seeds, accompanied by a performance that explores the duality of our aggregated memories of Singapore’s colonial and post-independence past. The seeds, frozen in ice within the installation, together with the performance and its play of elements and temporality, will attempt to insinuate the interstices of our colonial representations.
